This glossary explains words related to sexual and reproductive health and rights. You'll find words about the body, feelings, relationships, sex, identity, health and legislation.
Everyone has the right to learn about these matters. When you have the right words for your body, relationships and sexuality, it is easier to:
understand and find information about your own health,
communicate with a partner,
explain what you need to healthcare professionals.
The glossary was made in Sweden and includes words related to Swedish legislation and the Swedish healthcare system. Even if you live in another country, the words and explanations here can help you.

Abort
Abortion
When a pregnant person does not want to have a baby, the person can get an abortion at the hospital. After an abortion, you are no longer pregnant.

When one or more people take over the care of a child. This person or these people become the parent(s) of the child.

Emergency birth control pill (“the morning after pill”)
A pill that can be taken immediately, i.e. up to three to five days after unprotected vaginal intercourse, to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

Having sex around or inside the anus, for example with the fingers, tongue, a sex toy or penis.

Andrologist
A doctor who is a specialist in the penis and testicles. Andrologists are experts in genital function and diseases. An andrologist can also answer questions about sex.

An asexual person feels no or very little sexual attraction to others.

Assisted reproduction
When medical care provides help to a person or a couple who wants to get pregnant but cannot do so without help. Examples of assisted reproduction are insemination and IVF.

When penetration during vaginal intercourse is interrupted before ejaculation from the penis, so the semen ends up outside the vagina. This is a very unreliable method of preventing pregnancy.

Foul-smelling discharge from the vagina. Bacterial vaginosis means there is an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina.

An inflammation of the glans of the penis, causing increased redness, a small red rash, or causing the head and underside of the foreskin to feel irritated and raw.

A clinic that offers young children health exams, vaccines and guidance. Accepts children from birth until they begin preschool class. Also called BVC.

When a person under the age of 18 is subjected to violence, violations, or is not taken care of by their parents or another responsible adult. Hitting a child is illegal in Sweden, even for parents, regardless of whether the purpose is to discipline the child.

A clinic where you go when you are pregnant that offers health care and check‑ups throughout pregnancy. Also called MVC, Mödravårdscentral.

Crime of child pornography
A crime in which a person takes, has, distributes, sells or in some other way enables sexual or pornographic pictures of people who have not yet reached puberty or who are under age 18.

A marriage in which at least one person is under the age of 18. Child marriage is not legal in Sweden.

The part of the hospital where you can stay for several days after giving birth.

An item used to capture menstrual blood. A pad is attached inside the underwear.

A bisexual person is someone who is romantically attracted to and/or wants to have sex with people of any gender.

Part of the internal genitalia if you have a penis. The epididymis is located in the scrotum.

Flashing
When someone shows their genitals on‑line or in real life to someone in order to offend them or cause discomfort. In legal terms, this is called sexual molestation.

Skin folds located outside the body around the vagina, clitoris and urethra. There are inner and outer labia.

Body part found on the upper body. Breasts consist of fatty tissue and mammary glands.

A test taken to check whether there are any changes to the cells of the cervix that could lead to cervical cancer.

Embryo
An embryo is formed when an egg and sperm merge. This is called fertilization. Then, inside the uterus, the embryo develops into a fetus, which develops into a baby.

Endometriosis
When tissue from inside the uterus grows outside of the uterus, often in the fallopian tubes or abdominal wall. Endometriosis can cause severe pain during periods.

Having sex by rubbing or pressing the genitals against someone else’s genitals or another body part.

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection that often produces no symptoms, but which can cause pain or discomfort when urinating, unusual discharge from the vagina, urethra or rectum, or pain in the lower belly or testicles. Untreated, gonorrhea can make it harder to have a baby. It can be treated with antibiotics. Gonorrhea is included in the Communicable Diseases Act.

Having a fetus in the uterus, which is in the belly. Pregnancy usually lasts about nine months.

When a legal adult contacts and suggests meeting up with a child under the age of 15, often over the internet, in order to commit sexual assault. This is illegal. In legal terms, this is called contact with a child for sexual purposes.

A doctor who specializes in the vulva and vagina. Gynecologists are experts in genital function, diseases and pregnancy. A gynecologist can also answer questions about sex.

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. There are different kinds of hepatitis. The most common kinds are hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Hepatitis is caused by a virus.

Herpes can affect the mouth and genitals. Herpes can cause blisters and sores that may itch, sting and be very painful, or that may cause no sensation at all. Herpes is transmitted very easily.

A heterosexual person is someone who is romantically attracted to and/or wants to have sex with people of the opposite sex.

HIV
HIV is a virus that can be transmitted between people, for example through intercourse without a condom or by sharing needles. HIV impairs the immune system. Without treatment, HIV can become AIDS, which is deadly. With treatment, people with HIV cannot pass the virus to anyone else and will not develop AIDS; they will also live just as long as anyone else. Everyone in Sweden is entitled to free testing and treatment for HIV.

Negative attitudes, views or feelings towards bisexual and homosexual people or towards bisexuality and homosexuality. This is often expressed through prejudice, disdain, anger, hatred or violence.

A homosexual man is someone who is romantically attracted to and/or wants to have sex with men. A homosexual woman is someone who is romantically attracted to and/or wants to have sex with women.
HPV (humant papillomvirus)
Human papillomavirus (HPV)
A very common virus, of which there are different types. Some types of the virus cause genital warts (condyloma) or cellular changes. Other types of the virus cause warts on the hands and feet.

A vaccine that protects against several types of HPV, which can cause cellular changes to the uterus and lead to uterine cancer.

A rule of conduct that applies to someone who has a sexually transmitted infection, such as HIV, chlamydia or gonorrhea, which stipulates that they must tell anyone they are going to have sex with that they have the disease. A doctor imposes compulsory partner notification, but can also remove it in some cases.

A medical procedure in which sperm is placed in the uterus in order for a person to get pregnant.

A collective term for different physical properties that cause someone’s body to not easily be identified as a particular sex, according to society’s norms for sex, and who are therefore neither typically “male” nor “female.” Variations may apply to the external and/or internal genitals, chromosomes and hormone production.

IVF is a treatment in which the egg is collected and fertilized by a sperm outside of the body. A fertilized egg is called an embryo. A few days after fertilization, a doctor inserts the embryo into the uterus. IVF is also called “test tube” fertilization.

When a man subjects a woman he lives with to systematic abusive treatment. For example by hitting, forcing her to have sex, subjecting her to psychological abuse or not allowing her to leave home.

An organization that supports and helps women and trans people who have been subjected to violence by someone close to them, for example, by offering housing if the person is in danger.

A clinic that treats diseases that affect people who have a uterus. Pregnant people can go here. These clinics offer ultrasound exams of fetuses and more. They are found at most large hospitals.

A physical procedure to confirm one’s gender identity as a man, woman or non-binary person. This procedure might include surgery on the genitals or taking hormones to change the body’s appearance. Many, but not all, trans people want to undergo some kind of gender-affirming treatment.

A diagnosis that involves suffering as a result of the fact that your body is not consistent with your gender identity. A person with gender dysphoria may choose to have gender-affirming treatment.

An infection that a person can get from having unprotected sex with someone who has a sexually transmitted disease.

Cutting off or damaging the clitoris. Sometimes the inner and/or outer labia are cut off and the vaginal opening is sewn together. This is considered a gross violation of human rights and is illegal in Sweden. It is also illegal to plan, attempt, prepare to or take a girl or woman to another country in order to conduct genital mutilation. Genital mutilation is sometimes called female circumcision (kvinnlig omskärelse).

A series of exams to determine whether a person has the right to free gender affirming care. Anyone who is diagnosed with gender dysphoria has the right to this care. The diagnosis is made by a specialist team at a hospital.

A common word for a homosexual woman. Also called flata in Swedish, or dyke.

Blood that comes out of the vagina from the uterus. This happens regularly about once a month starting at puberty.

A term for people who identify as men and have sex with other men.

Mycoplasma is a bacterium that can cause itchiness in the genitals and discharge from the penis or vagina. It can also cause pain in the lower abdomen or in the scrotum.

A benign tumor that can occur in the muscle tissue of the uterus. Fibroids are very common; almost half of all people who have a uterus have them.

A pleasant feeling that can happen during sex with others or with yourself. An orgasm causes the muscles around the genitals to contract.

When orgasm happens too quickly, is abnormally delayed, happens rarely or does not happen at all. When an orgasm is perceived as uncomfortable or too weak, this is also orgasmic dysfunction.

Reporting to social services that you are concerned that a child is being treated badly. Teachers, doctors or preschool staff who feel concerned about children under age 18 are obligated to submit a report of concern. Private individuals are not obligated to submit a report, but they should do so.

When someone claims that they can examine a girl’s genitals to see whether she has had sex with other people or not, which is not possible to determine medically. Healthcare staff are not permitted to conduct such an examination or write a certificate regarding this, regardless of whether someone has given consent. The vaginal ring is a contraception method that prevents pregnancy. It is a soft plastic ring that you insert into your vagina yourself.

A shot that a person with a uterus gets once every three months. The birth control shot is a contraception method that prevents pregnancy.

Birth control implant
A soft plastic rod that is inserted under the skin on the upper arm of a person with a uterus. The birth control implant is a contraception method that prevents pregnancy.

A person with whom you are in a relationship, regardless of their gender.

A small silicone cup that is placed inside the vagina, covering the cervix. A diaphragm is used with a gel. Diaphragms are a contraception method.
